EAR
The ear is critical to hearing and balance in our body. Ear symptoms include ear pain, itch, discharge, hearing loss, ringing in the ears and dizziness. Some patients may experience ear symptoms as a result of an underlying nasal or throat problem.
Otoscopy, microscopic examination under magnification, ear cleaning, nasoendoscopy and hearing test maybe required during your visit for proper assessment and management.
Ear conditions:
-
- Ear infections (fungal, discharging ear)
- Ear wax impaction
- Ear drum perforation
- Hearing loss (aging, noise induced or sudden)
- Lumps around the ear (sebaceous cyst, keloids, preauricular sinuses)
- Vertigo (positional, vestibular neuronitis, labyrhinitis, menierre’s)
- Bell’s palsy
- Eustachian tube dysfunction
Ear procedures:
- Excision biopsy
- Myringotomy and grommet tube insertion
- Ear drum repair (myringoplasty)
- Tympanoplasty
- Mastoidectomy
- Balloon dilation of eustachian tube
NOSE
The nose functions as a portal of air entry into our respiratory system, equilibrates pressure to our sinuses and middle ear, cleans the air of foreign particles and enables us to smell.
Nasal symptoms include itchy, runny nose, blocked nose, nose bleeds, post nasal drip, problems with smell, nasal pain and facial congestion. As the nose is linked to the ear, some patients may experience ear blockage, decreased hearing, ringing in the ear, or practice mouth breathing leading to a dry throat or frequent throat pains.
Nasoscopy will most likely be performed during your visit. It is a comfortable and quick procedure involving insertion of a flexible nasoscope through your nose after application of an anaesthetic decongestant nasal spray. This procedure is needed to examine your entire nasal cavity and upper airway. Nasal biopsies, chemical cautery for nasal bleeds can be performed at the same time if lesions are encountered.
Nasal conditions:
- Epistaxis (nose bleed)
- Nasal bone fractures
- Allergic rhinitis
- Sinusitis
- Nasal polyps (lump in the nose)
- Deviated nasal septum (crooked nose)
- Inferior turbinate hypertrophy (swollen nasal lining)
- Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC)
- Sinonasal tumors
Nasal procedures:
- Nasoscopy
- Cautery and hemostasis of nose bleeds
- Endoscopic septoplasty
- Endoscopic turbinoplasty
- Endoscopic adenoidectomy
- Manipulation and reduction of nasal bone fractures
- Endoscopic volumetric reduction of inferior turbinates
- Endoscopic sinus surgery
- Balloon sinuplasty
THROAT
The throat is important for taste, swallowing and speech. Symptoms include sore throat, lump in throat, problems with swallowing, voice changes, bad breath, altered taste sensation and blood stained phelgm. A persistent swelling or ulcer in your mouth should be evaluated by an ENT doctor.
During your visit, a complete head and neck examination with otoscopy, nasoscopy and neck palpation will be performed. A biopsy maybe taken in clinic if a lesion is found.
Throat conditions:
- Tonsilitis
- Tonsil stones
- Foreign body in throat
- Laryngopharyngeal reflux
- Mucoceles, ulcers, papilloma, ranula
- Vocal cord nodules, polyps, cysts
- Vocal cord immobility, dysfunction
- Oral cavity, oropharyngeal, laryngeal cancer
Throat procedures:
- Excision biopsy
- Tonsillectomy
- Endoscopic laryngeal microsurgery
- Direct laryngoscopy and biopsy
- Pan-endoscopy and biopsy
- Rigid esophagoscopy and removal of foreign body
NECK
It is advisable to see an ENT doctor if you have noticed a swelling in the neck for a few weeks. These swellings may be painful or painless, persistent despite antibiotics, and maybe associated with ear, nose and throat symptoms.
A complete head and neck examination involving otoscopy, neck palpation and nasoscopy will be performed. A sample of the swelling maybe taken (fine needle aspiration cytology) in clinic and scans scheduled if required.
Neck conditions:
- Cervical lymph nodes
- Thyroid nodules
- Salivary gland stones / swelling
- Thyroglossal duct cyst
Neck procedures:
- Excision biopsy
- Incision and drainage
- Thyroidectomy
- Parotidectomy
- Excision submandibular gland
- Sistrunk procedure
